Looking for an ATM in Puerto Escondido? You’re in the right place! This post explains where to get money out in Puerto Escondido.
If you’re backpacking Mexico for the first time, or you haven’t started your trip yet, you’ll know how important it is to carry cash.
The majority of restaurants, bars and shops in Mexico do not accept credit or debit cards. That means knowing where the ATMs and cash points are is key to having a hassle-free trip.
ATMs and cash points in Puerto Escondido are hard to find! The truth is, there aren’t many. And if you don’t know where they are, this can cause a lot of stress.
This post explains all of the places in Puerto Escondido with reliable cash points and ATMs. Whilst I realise this isn’t the most exciting post, it’s definitely one of the most needed!
So, let’s get started!

Where are the ATMs and cash points in Puerto Escondido?
Centro/Rinconada ATMs
Centro has the lowest fees for withdrawing money from an ATM. If you’re arriving in Puerto Escondido via the airport or ADO bus station, I recommend getting money out in the HSBC or Santander when you arrive.
Note there are no reliable ATMs in La Punta, so if you are staying there, make sure you get cash out first!
🏧 HSBC
The HSBC in Centro is one of the safest and most reliable ATMs in Puerto Escondido. It is around a 5-minute walk from the ADO station, and 7 minutes from the large Chedraui supermarket. Use the first machine as you walk in to be given the smallest notes (rather than all 500s).
📍Exact location of the HSBC ATM: 71980 Centro, Calle 2a. Pte. 205, Centro, Oax., Mexico
🏧 BANCO SANTANDER
This is another reliable ATM in Puerto Escondido but expect large notes. The ATM here usually dispenses in 500s.
📍Exact location of the Santander ATM: Costera Carr. Federal N°. 200, Granjas del Pescador, 71984 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico
🏧 RINCONADA RESTAURANT STRIP – MINI SUPER 69
This ATM in Puerto Escondido isn’t always working, but it’s handy when it is. It’s the closest ATM to beaches like Carrizalillo, Manzanillo and Angelito, as well as all of the restaurants in Rinconada.
You can find it just before the entrance to Carrizalillo, outside the convenience store.
📍Exact location of the ATM in Rinconada: Benito Juárez 23, Rinconada, 71983 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico
🏧 CHEDRAUI SUPERMARKET
There are a couple of ATMs in Puerto Escondido’s Chedraui. These are perfect to use after you’ve finished shopping.
📍Exact location of the ATM in the Chedraui: Av. Oaxaca 105, Centro, 71980 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico
🏧 ATM BANCOMER
Bancomer is another reliable ATM in Centro Puerto Escondido.
📍Exact location of the Bancomer ATM: Av. Alfonso Pérez Gasga 609B, Libertad, 71984 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico
Zicatela ATMs
Note: The ATMs in Zicatela have the highest withdrawal and conversion rates in Puerto Escondido. If possible, avoid using the Zicatela ATMs.
🏧 BUNGALOWS ZICATELA
There is an ATM in the Bungalows Zicatela hotel. This isn’t reliable and has a high withdrawal rate. Do not rely on this ATM, but it’s worth checking if you’re in the area.
📍Exact location of the ATM in Zicatela: Bungalows Zicatela, Av. Del Morro s/n, Marinero, 71986 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico
La Punta ATMs
Is there an ATM in La Punta?
Where is the La Punta ATM?
Well, La Punta is one of the hardest places to withdraw cash! There is only ONE ATM machine in La Punta, and most of the time it is out of order.
But if you’re desperate, check it out to see if it’s working.
🏧 LA PUNTA ATM – MINISUPER ROCKAWAY
The one ATM in La Punta is located in a small convenience store, right next to Mundaka pizza restaurant. Every time we have visited, it’s been broken, so it isn’t reliable (but worth a shot if you’re desperate).
If you’re arriving in Puerto Escondido via the ADO bus or airport, get your cash out in Centro before travelling down to La Punta.
We had to get a taxi all the way to Centro to withdraw cash, as the ATM in La Punta was just never working.
📍Exact location of the ATM in La Punta: Alejandro Cárdenas Peralta, Brisas de Zicatela, 70934 Brisas de Zicatela, Oax., Mexico
Tips for using ATMs in Mexico
Getting money out in Mexico is relatively safe, but always keep your wits about you. Check who is around and how safe it feels to withdraw money.
When withdrawing money in Mexico from an ATM, follow these key tips to ensure you don’t waste extra money on fees and withdrawals.
- NEVER use the conversion rate, always withdraw in your regular currency. Tap ‘decline’ when it asks you if you’d like to use the conversion rate or not.
- Withdraw cash at banks like Santander and HSBC for the lowest fees.
Is Puerto Escondido cash only?
Most of the bars, restaurants and shops in Puerto Escondido only accept cash. That is why it is important to withdraw cash from an ATM when possible.
As newer and more modern venues open, some do have Visa machines, but not many. Always check with your server before ordering if you only have card, as some areas do not have any ATMs at all.
