Looking for the best hostel in Stockholm? There are so many hostels to choose from in Stockholm, but our favourite will always be the wonderful Generator!

Fun, modern, well-located, social, clean and a short walk from the main train station in Stockholm, it’s undoubtedly in the running for one of the best hostels in Stockholm.

Located in the centre of the popular Norrmalm and Vasastaden districts, Generator Hostel in Stockholm is surrounded by bars, restaurants, cafes, high-street stores, museums and some of Stockholm’s best attractions.

It’s the perfect hostel to base yourself in if you’re a solo backpacker, digital nomad or tourist visiting the city for the first (or third) time!

In the following post, I explain why I think Generator is the best hostel in Stockholm and why it should be at the top of your Stockholm bucket list to stay there! So, let’s get started!

Best Hostel In Stockholm: My Honest Review of Generator Hostel

So, what makes Generator Hostel so special? Like I said (and always stand by) I never recommend anywhere or anything on my blog that doesn’t deserve it. But this Stockholm hostel truly deserves it!

We loved our time at Generator Stockholm. It’s truly a unique and beautiful hostel, and we immediately felt ‘at home’ upon arrival. And for me, when staying somewhere new, the atmosphere and vibe are something that I immediately notice.

As someone in their early thirties, working as a digital nomad; I don’t want a raving party hostel, but I still love a good old-fashioned social buzz. As soon as we walked into Generator, I knew that was what we had. Bingo!

Greeted by friendly staff, we were checked into our room in minutes, and shown around some of the hostel’s best facilities. My eye was immediately drawn to the huge common area with comfy sofas and chairs (as a remote worker who hates trudging around cities to find a suitable place to work, this was heavenly to see!)

Then there’s the location of the Generator Hostel. As we only had a short time in the city (which I’m sure is the same for many of you), we wanted to be in the heart of the action. From Generator, we were able to walk to the main shopping districts, restaurants and bars within five minutes, and Gamla Stan within 30 minutes. For us, this was ideal.

Our private room had a comfy and large double bed, with giant windows overlooking the quintessential colourful Stockholm buildings. In addition to this, the hostel (which was more like a hotel), had a modern, clean and spacious lounge area fit with a coffee bar, which then turned into a social bar space in the evening!

And for those budget backpacking, the rumours that Stockholm isn’t the cheapest city in the world are unfortunately, painfully, true. That meant having an onsite restaurant in Generator was a game changer; as we were able to eat cheaper food in the hostel (which still tasted good) and save our precious pennies for experiences around the city.

Overall, we truly loved our time at Generator Hostel. It’s a clean, modern and unique hostel in Stockholm, with a great social atmosphere, lovely staff and unbeatable on-site facilities!

When we inevitably return to the beautiful city of Stockholm, we will undoubtedly stay at Generator again!

Do I need to pre-book my stay at Generator Hostel Stockholm?

Yes, yes and yes again! Hostels in Europe book up fast, and Generator is one of the most popular hostels in Stockholm. Even though it’s a big hostel, it books out quickly, and you don’t want to miss out.

Make sure you book your stay at least 3-4 weeks in advance (or even further in advance if you can!)

Where is Generator Hostel Stockholm?

Generator Stockholm is within a ten-minute walk from Stockholm Central Station, and around a 30-minute walk from the city’s old town, Gamla Stan.

Stockholm is a walkable city, but Generator does have bikes for hire if you’d instead cycle, and is also well-located near the Metro line.

Booking a stay at Generator Hostel Stockholm

What facilities are available at Generator Hostel?

Generator Hostel goes above and beyond when it comes to in-house facilities! From a large communal area with social activities, foosball tables, skate and bike hire, video games (including Mario Kart), board games, access to Bar Hilma (right next door), a tattoo parlour, an onsite restaurant, cafe and more.

It also has all of the standard facilities that you’d expect of a hotel or hostel; including laundry services, 24-hour reception, strong and fast wifi, luggage storage, late check-out and a tour desk to book all of the best Stockholm activities.

Events and free activities at Generator Hostel

The number of free events and activities hosted by Generator was one of our favourite parts of staying there. You can always expect a nightly social activity, as well as a walking tour every morning, occasional yoga and morning runs.

Nightly activities include everything from trivia, happy hours, games nights, karaoke and even an arcade night, fit with video games like Mario Kart!

Even if you don’t want to join in with the organised fun, you can chill in the social area, drink a cup of coffee from the onsite cafe or a pint from the bar. Just go at your own pace!

Food and drink at Generator Hostel

There’s an onsite restaurant at Generator Hostel that serves food around the clock, so there is no need for a kitchen. As I said, the vibe of Generator is more like a social hotel than a hostel, so it’s nothing short of top-notch service.

The restaurant and bar next door are open throughout the day, serving Western food such as burgers, chips, pizzas and more.

If you’re a digital nomad in need of a coffee (or three), there’s a trendy onsite cafe serving coffee and snacks. We used this quite a few times throughout the day, as it saved us from leaving the hostel to keep us topped up!

In the evenings, the cafe switches over to become a handy little bar. You can then switch over from caffeine to alcohol, lounge in the communal space and socialise with like-minded travellers.

Generator Hostel: FAQs

1) Is Generator Hostel Stockholm a party hostel?

No, but it is a social hostel. Generator is set up for both solo, group and couple travel, and it is what you make of it!

We found most people headed to the communal area around 6/7 pm to socialise and drink, but of course, many people were still out exploring or having an early night. There isn’t an onsite club or anything too crazy, so you can choose the type of trip you want to have!

2) How to get to Generator Hostel from the airport?

The easiest way to get from either airport in Stockholm to Generator Hostel is via bus. Both airports run an airport-to-city bus (Flygbussarna or Flix Bus) to Central Station. Generator Hostel is just a 10-minute walk from the main central train station in Stockholm. Easy peasy!
